About Ian |
Ian Shearer started employment in Wm.Lows in Dingwall at the age of 16. At the age of 22, he became the assistant manager of McGregors Supermarket in Alness which is now Somerfields. After a while he moved on to a change in profession. He became a driver/storeman for an oil related supply company where he gained all heavy goods vehicles licences and developed a liking for the driving profession. He moved on to work at Nigg Shipyard for 5 years but was accutely aware that the rig building industry wasn't of a permanent nature and therefore began to look at what his next career step would be. After teaching both his daughters to drive he believed that he was very competent, of a patient nature and able to communicate instruction clearly. Driving tuition seemed to be the way forward. He realised there was a shortage of instructors and therefore a growing market of which he could take advantage. He decided to train for his new profession. During his employment at Nigg he studied in depth for 2 years and passed all the relevant tests to gain his "Green Badge" (Driving Instructor Approved by The Driving Standards Agency) in 1991. With 15 years experience, Ian's name is probably the first you will hear when you mention learning to drive in the Easter Ross area. Ian believes his success lies in his professionalism and dedication to the job which works hand in hand with his sense of humour and patience.
Ian also wears another hat. Ian is also the drummer in the Ardross Band which he started with his friend James Mackay (also from Ardross) away back in 1966. Originally started as a 'bit of craic' it quickly became popular and the band travelled around the North of Scotland playing a variety of music in halls and hotels over the past 40 years. Nowadays, due to a complete change in social life, they mostly play for private functions and weddings. But still remain hugely popular. The Band consists of Ian on drums, James Mackay on rythmn guitar and vocals, Derek Spence on lead guitar/mandolin and vocals and John (The Box) McErleoch on button key accordian. The Band plays a variety of music including Scottish Dance, Country and Irish, and Rock n Roll from the 60's onwards and cater for all age groups.
